The United States Transportation Department granted approval for a new airline, Breeze Aviation Group, by the founder of JetBlue Airways.

Breeze Aviation has up to one year to begin flights, with up to 22 planes. According to the Associated Press, the company plans to use smaller planes in small markets to reduce costs as they start out.

The company is being led by David Neeleman, who helped found JetBlue 20 years ago. He also founded Morris Air, which was sold to Southwest Airlines nearly 30 years ago, and Brazilian airlines Azul.

Breeze will lease their initial 118-seat Embraer jets from Azul and other companies, as well as purchasing Airbus 220-300 planes. They will base their operations in Salt Lake City, but will be headquartered in Darien, Connecticut.
